Kwesta Captures The ‘Spirit’ Of South Africa In New Video

The year 2017 may have been one of the biggest highlights of Kwesta’s career, but there’s no stopping him in 2018. His success and hardwork have transcended into 2018 and his music video for ‘Spirit’ with Wale proves that. Kwesta and Tebza (director) have managed to meticulously encapsulate the story of our people into a film as brief as 04:25, this is so extraordinary.

The music video, shot in Katlehong, displays multiple layers of the black South African living in the ghetto the country over. Our favourite thing about this visual is how they peel a world into another that’s directly opposite to it, like the holy communion and shots in the club, or Sunday collection and money rains in the club.

The messages of South African’s struggle to fit in (the make up scenes with the sister and then the party girls); simple lives (stepping on clothes to wash them or playing ”Spring time” by water splashing), their alcohol struggles, as well as the relentless inequality battle (the police and the old South African flag burning) will give you goosebumps.

There are so many layers in this music video that one could write a thesis on to be honest, but the biggest thread here is how our people have immersed themselves in various mediums of faith to cope, whether that be religion (the various churches displayed) or that of traditional practice (the Inyanga). We love how it’s not all gloom in the video too, despite the strong messages contained in this motion picture, there is a ruling atmosphere of pride and hope. Especially with the multiple (church) dancing scenes and the celebratory brass band procession going down the street.

This is black pride. Dankie Kwesta for representing South African’s as they are. MAGICAL!
